Studio 303 Student and Alumni Up-Dates

MICHAEL CAVALIERI was the featured baritone soloist with the Chicago Civic Orchestra in Gustav Mahler's SONGS OF A WAYFARER, tenor SEAN CLARK is a new member of the Metropolitan Opera's auxiliary chorus, soprano ANNE-KATHRYN (KATY) OLSEN sang the role of Emily in the world premier of Mark Shreshinsky's Machine-A Fire Opera for San Francisco's Crucible Theater. She'll will sing the soprano solos in J. S. Bach's  St. Matthew Passion with San Francisco's American Bach Soloists in early 2012.   She was selected to participate as a vocal artist with the summer Baroque festival TAFFEL MUSICK in Toronto this summer.  Katy just received her masters in Vocal Performance from The San Francisco Conservatory this spring and won the San Francisco VOICES OF MUSIC Competition. ERIK GUSTAFSON sang the role of The Evangelist in the Phoenix Bach Society's recent St. John Passion, district and regional Metropolitan Competition Winner JUSTIN CARPENTER covered Goro and performed Yakuside in the Arizona Opera's production of Madame Butterfly, and LAUREN CHAPMAN was a featured guest actress on TNT TV's The Closer.

TREGONY SHEPHERD is touring with the National Disney Company of Mary Poppins as Mrs. Brill ( Treg is aformer member of the Phantom of the Opera and Les Miz Broadway and National tour casts and was cast as The Witch in Into the Woods and Mrs. Nellie Lovett in Sweeney Todd for ASU LOT ).  KELLY JEAN GRANT joined the cast of Phantom of the Opera on Broadway in New York (She recently essayed the role of Christine on the Phantom national tour and was Kathy in the Toni Award winning Broadway revival production of  of COMPANY).  Here's Kelly:

Tenor RAY GABBARD now lives in London, England and teaches Drama. He was Raoul in Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, in Hamburg, Germany and in the U. S. National Tour.  He also did the role of THE MAN in Lloyd Webber's Whistle Down the Wind in the UK. He was recently awarded a distinguished alumni award for contributions to the performing arts by his Idaho high school. ALYSSA CHIARELLO sings her first Anita in West Side Story in a Phoenix area theater while SOOKYOUNG KIM (as Tuptim) and CATHERINE WONG (as Lady Tiang), sang recently in a local production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I.  Catherine was just cast in Sunset Boulevard for the Arizona Broadway Theater.

EDDIE MALDONADO played the Master of Ceremonies, MICHELLE CHIN played Sally Bowes and CULLEN LAW stage directed  ASU Lyric Opera Theater's production of CABARET (Michelle won a Young Artist Scholarship from the ariZONI Theater Committee last year. Eddy and Michelle are currently in Phoenix Theater's production of GYPSY and Eddy will immediately join a tour of LEGALLY BLONDE after it's close.

TOMMY STRAWSER, the young German Soldier and KAYTE ZHANG was Lulu.  Kayte was also the recipient a Young Artist Scholarship from the ariZONI Theater Committee.  Michelle and Eddie were just cast in the Phoenix Theater production of GYPSIE.  Cuillen was Charlie Brown in ASU LOT production of Your a Good Man, Charlie Brown recently.

MIRANDA CRISPIN is in Paris, France. She has been headlining as a jazz soloist there (New York Bar, Cafe Fantasia, Le Darling, L'Autrement Bon, Eurodisney, etc.), performing with jazz pianist Laurent Bronner, the Firebird Quartet, and the Clambo Septet.  She's teaching musical theatre and voice at the Conservatoire Americaine, and she's directing a cabaret called "Screen to Stage" at the Theatre Adyar in Paris. ITHAMAR ENRIQUEZis in Los Angeles in TV work and already has been seen on The Office, Raising Hope, Rules of Engagement, Hawthorne, Law and Order: LA, Disney's Austin and Ally and Jimmy Kimmel Live! Commercially, he's done spots for Esurance, Dunkin Donuts,  Ace Hardware, Cymbalta, Bridgestone and McDonalds.  Here's Ithamar

KRYSTINA HELENA (nee Alabado), after a two year tour of SPRING AWAKENING and cast member in the Broadway run of AMERICAN IDIOT,  is touring with the National Tour of American Idiot.  The news is in: ETHAN DEPUY will be an apprentice singing artist at THE ASH LAWN OPERA in Virginia this summer.  HANNAH BENTLEY just moved to New York!

Baritone  JUSTIN STAEBELL was soloist in a performance of the St. John Passion with the Phoenix Bach Society recently. He'll solo in the ASU Symphony performances of Brahms Requiem soon.  Baritone JASON FLECK was   Tommy Albright in BRIGADOON with Broadway Palm Theater.  The show will go to Florida in mid February for a few weeks and then sings with the Phoenix Symphony on their program AN EVENING WITH RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN (March 29,30, April 1). Jason will be working with the Phoenix Theatre developing a pre-professional training program for the summer, and teaching  music and acting classes.

ASU double major Vocal Performance/Music Theater graduate '10 and soprano RACHEL POLICAR continues at the Manhattan School of Music in her Vocal Performance Masters studies.  She's performed the role of Fire in MSM's production of L'Enfant et les Sortileges, Bernanutte the Squirrel in "The Secret Music Garden" for MSM outreach and sang the role of Josephine in Gilbert and Sullivan's HMS Pinafore with New York's DaCapo Opera recently.  At the Manhattan School, she'll essay the role of Miss Wordworth in Benjamin Britten's ALBERT HERRING on the school's Main Stage.  Rachel was just re-engaged by Da Capo and will sing the role of Josephine again in Pinafore in NYC.  She'll sing the role of Gretel in the Manhattan School's Hansel and Gretel soon. Tenor ERIC PERRY gave a recital in November '11 of Australian art song which was a featured exhibit for the Modern Masterpieces showcase at the Ballarat Art Gallery in Ballarat, Victoria Australia  December he performed as a soloist in Handel's Messiah at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in Buffalo with Gerald Thomas Gray, conductor. In March of this year he will give his capstone choral conducting concert in completion of my MM: Choral Conducting at University of Massachusetts Amherst and in July he will be on voice faculty of the Yogyakarta International Music Festival in Indonesia, working as a voice teacher and musical theater style coach


ASU Music Theater Studio 303 Graduate KELLY SULLIVAN  has been selected to play the role of Kate Howard on ABC TV's GENERAL HOSPITAL.   She has been seen on Broadway in CONTACT, BELLS ARE RINGING and replaced Sutton Foster in YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN.  LINDSEY GEROUX just landed the role of Anna in the Phoenix Theater production of SPRING  AWAKENING. Bass baritone JEFF TUCKER is currently in Norfolk, VA singing the title role in MIKADO. Virginia Opera still tours and he'll also sing Gilbert & Sullivan's delightful villain in Fairfax and in Richmond.  He and wife Aya are expecting Sadie Ayane Tucker due June 28th! At that time he'll singing the not so delightful villain Sparafucile in Rigoletto with the Lake George Opera in Saratoga, New York.

NICOLE NOWAKOWSKI
was just cast ast Ellen in this spring's  Front Row Theater production of Bullets over Broadway.   MELISSA NELSON KUPROSKI teaches elementary school music for the Chandler, AZ school system.   MARCIE GOLDSTEIN FRIEDMAN is the head of  her own Music therapy placement business located in Plano, Houston and Austin, Texas.


CHRISTINE WHALEY MALAIS WELTY
COOLEY is directing a brand new musical based upon the life of Babe Didrikson (called Babe: An Olympian Musical). Dirikson was one of the top 50 Athletes in America's history and a founding member of the Ladies Professional Golf Association. The production will be performed the Studio Artist's Theatre in Paradise Valley, AZ.  MM Tenor ROBBIE KEMP has a voice studio in Iowa City, Iowa and works with local musical theater groups as an actor and coach. He's headed to LA soon.



Cameron Becker, Tracy Wise



ASU Studio 303 Vocal Performance Graduate '06 and tenor CAMERON BECKER is in the second year of his two-year contract with THE REGENSBURG OPERA in Bavaria near Munich, Germany.  His challenging role assignments for the coming year are: Jamie in The Last Five Years,  Alfred in Die Fledermaus, Victorent in Die tote Stadt, Cosmo in Singing in the Rain, and Alfredo in La Traviata.   Cameron is a recent artist diploma recipient from the MOZARTEUM in Salzburg, Austria.  He was married to Lisa Rah in Kansas City last July.

TRACY WISE  sang the role of Pedrillo in the Spring/2011 Arizona Opera Production of Mozart's  THE ABDUCTION FROM THE SERAGLIO. Tracy has made a name for himself singing featured and character tenor roles around the United States with opera companies in Chicago, St. Louis, Dallas, Toledo, Mobile and others.  He visited a studio class in April commented on a few singers and fielded questions from current studio members.  When not performing, he charters and captains his own boat which is anchored on the Hudson River in the New York City Harbor.

Music Theater Freshman Nicole Nowakowski comes to Studio 303 from Scottdale's Saguaro High School.  ASU Opera Theater Masters Baritone Devin Barad hails from Albuquerque, NM and DMA in Vocal Performance candidate Helena Yip is from Hong Kong, People's Republic of China.



In December, 2011:
Lauren Gasic & Lindsey Geroux were featured soloists with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra in four concerts. Colte Julian* appeared on National TV.

                                                             

Senior Lauren Natalie (left nee Gasic), was a guest soprano soloist for the Phoenix Symphony Holiday Concert Series performed in December, 2011. Recent Musical Theater Graduate and Studio 303 member Lindsey Geroux was also featured solo artist on the Phoenix Symphony New Year's Eve Concert in January.


Studio 303 Lyric Baritone Colte Julian (right above), is currently headlining in the Chicago production of MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET as the Jerry Lee Lewis character.  In early December, the four leads (including Colte), appeared on the Rosie O'Donnell Show.  Here's Colte:

Tenor Justin Carpenter: District and Regional Finalist in the
Metropolitan Opera Auditions

Tempe’s own tenor JUSTIN CARPENTER  is one of four ASU Studio 303 members to have won the district Metropolitan Opera Auditions joining Costa Rican mezzo-soprano ILSE APESTEGUI, Russian bass-baritone YEVGENIY CHAINIKOV and Texas soprano LAUREEN PICKLE.







2011 AriZONI MUSICAL THEATER AWARD WINNERS!




Studio 303 AriZONI award winners for 2011 are  ALYSSA CHIARELLO for Martha in ASU LOT’s The Secret Garden, EDDIE MALDONADO for Ethan in Arizona Broadway Theater’s production of The Full Monty, TREGONEY SHEPHERD for the Witch in LOT’s Into The Woods (her second Zoni and also a 2011 ArZoni Scholarship winner), and CULLEN LAW for Dickon in the ASU production of The Secret Garden. Other studio nominees were CHRIS CHAVEZ, MICHELLE CHIN (Second-year AriZoni Young Artist Scholarship recipient), JEFFREY STEVENS.  303 Soprano KAYTE  ZHANG also won an AriZoni Young Artist Scholarship.
        


    Soprano Jeehyun Kim, ASU DMA   

•This past opera season in Seoul, Korea, former Studio 303 soprano Dr. Jeehyun Kim '08  sang the title role in Puccini's TOSCA (Be So To Opera Company) in July,  Musetta (Incm Opera Company), in Puccini's LA BOHEME in February and Nedda (Noble Art Opera Company pictured below), in Mascagni's I PAGLIACCI to be done in November.  Recently, the Korean Music Critics' Association, Jeehyun won the Outstanding Young Artist Award in collaboration with the Seoul Republic Newspaper.Earlier last season, she sang her first Michaela in Bizet's  CARMEN with the Seoul National Opera Company in Korea in July/2010 and  repeated the same role for the opera in Prague, Czechoslovakia later in the 2010/2011 season.




She was just promoted to Full Professor of Voice at SAN MYOUNG UNIVERSITY in Seoul specializing in Voice Instruction, French Diction and Vocal Pedagogy.  JeeHyun has also been cast as Adina in a coming production of Donizetti's ELISIR D'AMORE to be performed in Seoul next season.  She gave her professional debut recita at Seoul's famous Sejong Concert Hall and in addition to her busy performing schedule and her busy teaching career, Jeehyun has three Children.    See 303 Kids
Coming-up next year, Jeehyun will also sing the role of Cho-Cho San in Pucinni's MADAME BUTTERFLY
